Radek Štěpánek, one of tennis’ most charismatic and resilient players, retired from the ATP Tour a few years ago after a career filled with remarkable achievements. Known for his pivotal role in securing two Davis Cup titles for the Czech Republic and his victories over tennis giants like Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka, Radek left an indelible mark on the sport. Now, he’s stepping back onto the court in a new capacity as a competitor in the Legends Team Cup.
This exciting new format brings together some of the sport’s most iconic players to compete in a global team-based tournament. In an exclusive interview with Mark Jensen, Radek discusses his decision to return to competition, what it means to be part of a team again, and why he’s excited for the upcoming Legends Team Cup tour.
Radek, it’s fantastic to see you back in the world of tennis, this time as part of the Legends Team Cup. What motivated you to return to competition in this new format?
“Thanks, Mark. Honestly, the love for competition never really leaves you, even after you retire. When I heard about the Legends Team Cup, it immediately sparked my interest. It’s a chance to experience the thrill of competition again, but in a different setting—one that emphasizes team spirit, which I’ve always cherished, especially from my Davis Cup days. Playing alongside and against some of my old friends and rivals in a fun, yet competitive, environment is something I couldn’t pass up.”
You had an incredible career with many highlights, including two Davis Cup titles and victories over some of the biggest names in tennis, like Federer, Murray, and Wawrinka. How does it feel to be part of a team again, especially in this new Legends Team Cup format?
“Being part of a team is something I’ve always enjoyed, particularly in the Davis Cup, where the camaraderie and collective effort were incredibly rewarding. In the Legends Team Cup, I’m looking forward to that same sense of unity. We’ll be strategizing together, supporting each other, and competing for a shared goal. It’s a different dynamic from singles competition, and it brings out a different kind of energy in everyone. I’m really excited to contribute to the team and to experience the matches in this new way.”
The Legends Team Cup also includes an annual world tour, where the teams compete in various locations around the globe. How do you feel about traveling and playing in different environments again, but now in this unique context?
“That’s one of the aspects that really excites me about this. Traveling the world and playing tennis has always been one of my favorite parts of the sport, and now I get to do it again, but with a fresh perspective. Each city and each event will have its own vibe, and sharing those experiences with my teammates will make it even more special. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to reconnect with fans and bring them a new kind of tennis entertainment.”
How do you think the Legends Team Cup will differ from traditional tennis, and what do you think it will bring to the sport?
“The biggest difference is definitely the team aspect, which adds a whole new layer to the competition. Tennis is traditionally very individual, but here we get to work together, support each other, and strategize as a unit. It’s not just about your own performance, but about how you can contribute to the team’s success. I think this format will also create a deeper connection with the fans, who can cheer for entire teams rather than just individual players. It brings a fresh, engaging element to tennis that I think people will really enjoy.”
You had a long and successful career, with highlights like reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. How do you view the opportunity to compete again, but now with a different focus and mindset?
“For me, it’s about rekindling the joy of competition, but without the intense pressure that comes with the ATP Tour. This is more about enjoying the game, having fun, and sharing that with my teammates and the fans. I’ve always been a fighter on the court, and that passion hasn’t gone away, but now I can channel it in a way that’s more relaxed and focused on the team’s overall success.
Finally, what are your expectations for the upcoming season in the Legends Team Cup?
“I’m really looking forward to getting started and seeing what we can achieve as a team. It feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my career, and I’m excited to see how it unfolds. My hope is that we can play some great tennis, create memorable moments, and really enjoy the journey together. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I’m ready to embrace every moment of it.”
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us, Radek, and best of luck in your new adventure!
“Thanks, Mark! I’m really looking forward to what the future holds and to being back on the court with my teammates and fans.”
